This Order specifies Americium as a “prescribed substance” for the purposes of the Atomic Energy Act 1946. This confers upon the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry the power to: obtain information, enter and inspect, undertake work to discover minerals from which prescribed substances may be obtained, acquire prescribed substances and control the production and use of atomic energy through licensing.

Uranium, thorium, plutonium and neptunium or any of their respective compounds are already prescribed substances under the Atomic Energy Act 1946.
