The Education (Head Teachers' Qualifications) (England) Regulations 2003 provide that a first time head teacher of a maintained school in England must hold a prescribed qualification. These amendment Regulations add to the list of prescribed qualifications, which now includes:

(a)

the National Professional Qualification for Headship;

(b)

its equivalent in Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland; or

(c)

a comparable qualification obtained elsewhere in the European Economic Area (which includes the member states of the European Community, Iceland, Norway and Liechtenstein) or Switzerland.
