Explanatory note
(This note is not part of the Regulations)
These Regulations further amend the Education Support Grants Regulations 1984 by substituting a new regulation 4 (rate of grant) and a new Schedule listing the purposes for or in connection with which grants are payable.
The provisions of the new regulation 4 reduce to 50 per cent., the rate of grant payable on approved expenditure incurred on or after 1st April 1989 on items 2, 3 and (as respects England) 14 of the new Schedule (teaching mathematics in schools, teaching science and technology as part of primary education and combating the misuse of drugs respectively). It also reduces to 50 per cent. the rate of grant payable in the case of certain expenditure incurred on or after 1st April 1989 in respect of item 20 of the Schedule (developing the use of information technology in primary and secondary schools).
The changes in the Schedule involve the addition of a reference to “lecturers” in item 1 and to the training of staff in item 8, the deletion of “initial” in item 10 (courses of training for school governors (formerly item 11)), the omission of what was item 8 (the planning development and co-ordination of the provision of educational guidance for adult persons) and the addition of eleven new items as items 21 to 31.
The Regulations also revoke the Education Support Grants (Amendment) Regulations 1988 which are superseded by these Regulations.
