# 2003/422/EC: Commission Decision of 26 May 2003 approving an African swine fever diagnostic manual (Text with EEA relevance) (notified under document number C(2003) 1696), Division 3

Extent: E+W+S+N.I.

Virus isolation is best suited for the investigation of samples from small numbers of animals rather than mass surveillance. The virus isolation procedure is labour-intensive and requires one to three days before results are available. Two further cell culture passages may be necessary in order to detect small amounts of the virus in the sample. This may lead to an investigation time of up to 10 days before a final result is obtained. Autolysed samples can be cytotoxic to the cell culture and consequently of limited use.
