The use of asbestos diaphragms is not BAT.\nTechnique\nDescription\nApplicability\na\nBipolar membrane cell technique\nMembrane cells consist of an anode and a cathode separated by a membrane. In a bipolar configuration, individual membrane cells are electrically connected in series.\nGenerally applicable.\nb\nMonopolar membrane cell technique\nMembrane cells consist of an anode and a cathode separated by a membrane. In a monopolar configuration, individual membrane cells are electrically connected in parallel.\nNot applicable to new plants with a chlorine capacity of > 20 kt/yr.\nc\nAsbestos-free diaphragm cell technique\nAsbestos-free diaphragm cells consist of an anode and a cathode separated by an asbestos-free diaphragm. Individual diaphragm cells are electrically connected in series (bipolar) or in parallel (monopolar).\nGenerally applicable.",
