In order to prevent or, where that is not practicable, to reduce noise emissions, BAT is to use one or a combination of the techniques given below.\nTechnique\nDescription\nApplicability\n(a)\nAppropriate location of equipment and buildings\nNoise levels can be reduced by increasing the distance between the emitter and the receiver and by using buildings as noise screens.\nIn the case of existing plants, the relocation of equipment may be restricted by a lack of space or by excessive costs.\n(b)\nOperational measures\nThese include:\nimproved inspection and maintenance of equipment;\nclosing of doors and windows of enclosed areas, if possible;\noperation of equipment by experienced staff;\navoidance of noisy activities at night, if possible;\nprovisions for noise control during maintenance activities.\nGenerally applicable.\n(c)\nLow-noise equipment\nThis includes low-noise compressors, pumps and fans.\nGenerally applicable when existing equipment is replaced or new equipment is installed.\n(d)\nNoise attenuation\nNoise propagation can be reduced by inserting obstacles between the emitter and the receiver. Appropriate obstacles include protection walls, embankments and buildings.\nIn the case of existing plants, the insertion of obstacles may be restricted by a lack of space.\n(e)\nNoise-control equipment/\ninfrastructure\nThis includes:\nnoise-reducers;\nequipment insulation;\nenclosure of noisy equipment;\nsoundproofing of buildings.\nIn the case of existing plants, the applicability may be limited by a lack of space.",
