In order to reduce channelled emissions of organic compounds to air from fish smoking, BAT is to use one or a combination of the techniques given below.\nTechnique\nDescription\n(a)\nBiofilter\nThe waste gas stream is passed through a bed of organic material (such as peat, heather, root, tree bark, compost, softwood and different kinds of combinations) or some inert material (such as clay, activated carbon, and polyurethane), where organic (and some inorganic) components are transformed by naturally occurring microorganisms into carbon dioxide, water, other metabolites and biomass.\n(b)\nThermal oxidation\nSee Section 14.2.\n(c)\nNon-thermal plasma treatment\n(d)\nWet scrubber\nSee Section 14.2.\nAn electrostatic precipitator is commonly used as a pre-treatment step.\n(e)\nUse of purified smoke\nSmoke generated from purified primary smoke condensates is used to smoke the product in a smoke chamber.\nTable 11\nBAT-associated emission level (BAT-AEL) for channelled TVOC emissions to air from a smoke chamber\nThe lower end of the range is typically achieved when using thermal oxidation.\nThe BAT-AEL does not apply when the TVOC emission load is below 500 g/h.\nParameter\nUnit\nBAT-AEL (average over the sampling period)\nTVOC\nmg/Nm3\n15–50\nThe associated monitoring is given in BAT 5.",
