# Directive (EU) 2016/797 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 11 May 2016 on the interoperability of the rail system within the European Union (recast) (Text with EEA relevance), Division 1: List of subsystems

Extent: E+W+S+N.I.

For the purposes of this Directive, the system constituting the Union rail system may be broken down into the following subsystems, either:
(a) structural areas:
infrastructure,
energy,
trackside control-command and signalling,
on-board control-command and signalling,
rolling stock; or
(b) functional areas:
operation and traffic management,
maintenance,
telematics applications for passenger and freight services.
