Explanatory note

This Order varies the provisions of Schedule 1 to the Hallmarking Act 1973 , by which various precious metal articles are exempted from the requirement of hallmarking. The Order requires any solder used in certain exempt articles to be of the standard of fineness required if the article were to be hallmarked. The Order also removes the existing exemption for small chainwork, subject to a transitional period of six months from the coming into operation of the Order.
