  "heading": "Requirements relating to obligatory side marker lamps and to optional side marker lamps to the extent specified in part ii",
  "text": "1 Number–\n(a) A vehicle not covered by sub-paragraph (b) which is–\n(i) a motor vehicle first used on or after 1st April 1991 or a trailer manufactured on or after 1st October 1990:\nOn each side: two and as many more as are sufficient to satisfy the requirements of paragraph 2(a)\n(ii) a trailer manufactured before 1st October 1990:\nOne on each side\n(b) Long vehicles and vehicle combinations to which regulation 22 applies:\nThe numbers required by regulation 22\n2 Position–\n(a) Longitudinal–\n(i) A vehicle of a type mentioned in sub-paragraph 1(a)(i)–\n(A) Maximum distance from the front of the vehicle, including any drawbar, in respect of the foremost side marker lamp on each side:\n4 m\n(B) Maximum distance from the rear of the vehicle in respect of the rearmost side marker lamp on each side:\n1 m\n(C) Maximum separation distance between the light-emitting surfaces of adjacent side marker lamps on the same side of the vehicle:\n3 m or, if this is not practicable, 4 m\n(ii) A vehicle of a type mentioned in sub-paragraph 1(a)(ii):\nSuch that no part of the light-emitting surface is forward of, or more than 1530 mm to the rear of, the centre point of the overall length of the trailer\n(iii) Long vehicles and vehicle combinations, including any loads, to which regulation 22 applies:\nAs specified in regulation 22\n(b) Lateral:\nNo requirement\n(c) Vertical–\n(i) Maximum height above the ground:\n2300 mm\n(ii) Minimum height above the ground:\nNo requirement\n3 Angles of visibility–\n(a) Horizontal:\n45° to the left and to the right when viewed in a direction at right angles to the longitudinal axis of the vehicle\n(b) Vertical:\nNo requirement\n4 Alignment:\nTo the side\n5 Markings:\nNo requirement\n6 Size of illuminated area:\nNo requirement\n7 Colour:\nAmber\nor, if within 1 m of the rear of the vehicle it may be red\nor, if the vehicle is a trailer manufactured before 1st October 1990, it may be white when viewed from the front and red when viewed from the rear\n8 Wattage:\nNo requirement\n9 Intensity:\nVisible from a reasonable distance\n10 Electrical connections:\nNo individual requirement\n11 Tell-tale:\nNo requirement",
