Explanatory note
(This note is not part of the Order)
This Order of Council provides for the commencement of the Human Medicines (Authorisation by Pharmacists and Supervision by Pharmacy Technicians) Order 2025 (“the 2025 Order”) in so far as it is not yet in force.
This Order brings into force provisions in the 2025 Order amending, in particular, the Medicines Act 1968 (c. 67), the Human Medicines Regulations 2012 (S.I. 2012/1916) and the Medicines for Human Use (Clinical Trials) Regulations 2004 (S.I. 2004/1031). These provisions relate to allowing pharmacists to authorise pharmacy technicians to perform tasks that would otherwise need to be performed by, or under, the supervision of pharmacists, and allow pharmacy technicians to take primary responsibility for the preparation and assembly of medicinal products in hospital aseptic facilities.
