on the conclusion of an Agreement in the form of an Exchange of Letters between the European Union and the United Mexican States concerning amendments to Annexes I and II of the Agreement between the European Community and the United Mexican States on the mutual recognition and protection of designations for spirit drinks

THE EUROPEAN COMMISSION,

Having regard to the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union,

Having regard to Council Decision 97/361/EC of 27 May 1997 concerning the conclusion of an Agreement between the European Community and the United Mexican States on mutual recognition and protection of designations for spirit drinksf1, and in particular Article 4 thereof,

Whereas:

(1)

The Agreement between the European Community and the United Mexican States on the mutual recognition and protection of designations for spirit drinksf2 (hereinafter ‘the Agreement’) entered into force on 1 July 1997.

(2)

In accordance with Article 18 of the Agreement, the Union and the United Mexican States have negotiated an Agreement in the form of an Exchange of Letters to replace Annexes I and II to the Agreement, in order to update and correct the lists of protected spirit drinks.

(3)

This Exchange of Letters should be approved on behalf of the European Union.

(4)

The measures provided for in this Decision are in accordance with the opinion of the Committee for Spirit Drinks,

HAS DECIDED AS FOLLOWS:

The Agreement in the form of an Exchange of Letters between the European Union and the United Mexican States replacing Annexes I and II to the Agreement between the European Community and the United Mexican States on mutual recognition and protection of designations for spirit drinks is hereby approved on behalf of the European Union.

The text of the Agreement in the form of an Exchange of Letters, including the replaced Annexes I and II is attached to this Decision.

The Member of the Commission responsible for Agriculture and Rural Development is hereby empowered to sign the Exchange of Letters in order to bind the European Union.
